SUBJECT: HP Vectra 486ST (ALL Models)
Hewlett-Packard has discovered a problem with EISA card positioning in their HP
Vectra 486ST Personal Computers (all models).
They have heard that certain EISA cards do not function properly if they are
plugged into slots 6, 7 or 8. They have verified the problem through testing
and found the root cause of this problem which is not related to EISA bus
loading.
The following are some examples of the problem Hewlett-Packard has found:
A problem may occur at boot up if a card in slot 7 as BIOS boots to memory
address 7cxx. This may include random hangs during DMA processing. This same
problem may occur at other times.
When a Raycal Interlan card is plugged into slot 7 it is not possible to boot
off the floppy.
The Schneider & Koch FDDI card has also been found to have this slot-related
problem with slot 6.
These problems can occur with any of the American Megatrends Host Adapters
listed above.
Hewlett-Packard in its service note highly recommends installing only ISA cards
in slots, 6, 7 or 8.
In addition to the information supplied above, slots 3 and 5 are not BUS-MASTER
EISA slots, and the ROM address should be configured in the D000h range. A
software solution exist and is available from Hewlett-Packard by calling their
Technical Marketing Department @ (408) 720-3000.
